What happened
Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated announced the 2026 Inuktuuqta! Writing Prize on Oct. 7. This year’s theme is non-fiction biography: a detailed account of a person’s life and experiences. NTI says four additional prizes will also be awarded, though it has not posted their amounts or selection details. Source↗
Why it matters
The prize offers a substantial, time-sensitive opportunity for Nunavut Inuit writers to develop and publish original work in Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun. It is aimed at supporting written records of people’s lives, experiences and knowledge in Inuit languages.
What happens next
Applicants must submit a completed application form and an eight- to 12-page, double-spaced outline of a proposed full-length work. Submissions may be emailed, hand delivered to NTI’s Iqaluit office in a sealed envelope, or mailed with an Oct. 20, 2026 postmark. NTI does not state a time of day or time zone for emailed submissions. Source↗
Important details
The proposed work must be original, unpublished and written in Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun. NTI says it must not include plagiarized material, although the completed work may later be co-published with another organization or publisher. The application form asks for an NTI enrolment or card number. Source↗
