What happened
Bill 4, An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act, received assent on June 11, 2026 and is deemed to have come into force on July 1. It changes the Nunavut Child Benefit’s annual base amount from $330 to $696 per eligible child. The law also raises several income amounts used in the calculation and sets full annual Consumer Price Index adjustments for benefit calculations tied to taxation years after 2025. The Legislative Assembly record confirms the bill passed all stages and received assent. Source↗
Why it matters
The Nunavut Child Benefit is non-taxable, fully funded by Nunavut and paid monthly alongside the federal Canada Child Benefit. The CRA now lists the basic Nunavut amount as $58 a month per eligible child. Families with adjusted family net income above $22,065 may still receive a partial amount. The increased base benefit is a direct household-income measure for qualifying families facing high living costs. Source↗
What happens next
No separate Nunavut application is required for families already receiving the Canada Child Benefit: the CRA uses information from the CCB application and annual tax returns to determine territorial-benefit eligibility. Both spouses or common-law partners must file tax returns each year to keep receiving child benefits. The CRA generally pays the combined monthly benefit around the 20th of each month. Source↗
Important details
The legislation also removes the former earned-income supplement amounts of $275 for one child and $350 for two or more children from the formula, while increasing the base amount to $696 per child. The overall amount a family receives depends on income, number of eligible children and other calculation rules. The $58 monthly amount on the CRA page is the current published basic rate; it should not be treated as every family’s final payment.
